Our Winter Wonderland

It's the day after Christmas and I thought I would post a few of my own family images! Here are a few of my kids (not really kids anymore!) in the snow! Jake felt the need to jump off the deck into a pile of snow, and Katy braved the cold to pose for a few. I honestly don't remember ever having so much snow at once here in Spokane!

I'm enjoying just a little time off and will be back in the office on Monday. My wish for all of you is that your holidays are fun, safe, and filled with the love of family and friends!

Today was the day I had scheduled to deliver the last of the Discovery School orders. I only have a few, but since the school is closed I won't be able to deliver them. What a Beautiful Family

I have photographed these kids for a few years. They just keep getting cuter, and the family keeps growing! Valerie is a great big sister and smiled perfectly the entire time, while managing little sister Ellie. Cole managed to be still just long enough for a few shots, and little Will appeared in only about half the shots, and was off exploring, in the others. The process was a it chaotic, but the result is priceless!

Superb Fall Colors!

Here it is, October 27th and right at the peak of fall color! My sessions at the park this weekend were absolutely beautiful! In the top image, we have Angela and her family, to include Buddy, the dog! In the bottom image, there's Laurie, Jeremy, Sarah and Jace, posing by the pond last week. Little Jace is a doll and doesn't seem to ever stop smiling!

I do have some time slots available for outdoor portraits at the park this week. There aren't many, but I would hate for you to miss being photographed in this outstanding display of fall color! Give me a call ASAP and I'll see about squeezing your family in for a session before the leaves (and the snow!) fall!

This one's a keeper! Little Piper, a.k.a. "Pipes", has been to the studio regularly since she was a newborn! She has melted my heart ever since that first session. I look forward to every session with Piper-she is always a joy to photograph. For a change of pace, we did her 4-year old session outdoors. It was a great fall day, and she was an absoulutely fabulous model!

Here's Tyler, who had me laughing the entire session. He is quite a character! This was a favorite image from the park.

Ross came in for his session a while back--seems like ages ago. Sorry, Ross, for taking so long to post this! I love the casual look here, and how his eyes catch the light.

Here's Nicole in a great image. She brought a pastel pink top that worked really well with the tie-dye background I used here. I have had this backround in a drawer for over a year--thanks, Nicole, for inspiring me to find it and actually use it!

I love this image of Amanda & Alex with their newest addition, Jonah. He was the cutest, tiniest, little thing I have ever seen! He had so many expressions, I was amazed when I saw the images! He also was SOOO relaxed. He was a joy to photograph!

This is a great one we did in one of my favorite spots--the bridge at Cannon Hill Park. Beautiful weather helped make Mari's session a really nice one. Mari's fun attitude and great expressions were more a factor, however!

Wow! Mason was a riot! He came for his 3 month pictures (OK, he's almost 4 months!) with mom and grandma. He was a cornucopia of expressions--all of them cute, of course. We tried to get some images of him sitting, then on his tummy, but that didn't last long. He's seen here standing up--his preferred position. What a kid! I know he is a joy to his family. Look at him! How could he not be?

Summer is officially over now that school has started...but I am still booking and photographing seniors! There are still some session times available--but not many!

Two Great Sessions

The top image was taken just the other day in Laine's backyard. I love the color of the pool water in the background, not to mention her great eyes and smile! We got lots of fun images of Laine, and even a few with her dog, Meg!

Going to other locations for portrait sessions is a treat for me. It forces me to push the envelope and not rely on the set ups, areas, and props I see day in and day out.

Michelle is the subject of the next portrait. She was a fabulous subject and we got so many fantastic images I was amazed! Michelle will be entering the model competition put on by the Senior Portrait Atrists, a national professional photography association that I belong to. She could win a trip to Vegas in January! It's pretty exciting!

I photographed 2 Molly's today! The first Molly, starts her senior year in a few days, and the other, a newborn, has a few years to go! Congratulations and good luck to both you!

I loved the bold color in this image, and Molly's natural smile. It's definitely a keeper!

In the second photo, beautiful baby Molly was so content in the arms of mom and dad, Mitch and Shannon. Also a part of the session, session was brother Sam, who is now 3. Sam's 6 month old portrait is an favorite of mine, and has been hanging in the studio for a long time! I'll try to locate the image and get it posted! Here's a new one in the meantime...

The Next American Idol?

Kelsey came for her senior session the other day. I was blown away when she told me she tried out for American Idol!!! She did her try-out in New York. I am so impressed that she had the courage to do that. Now that she's had the experience she wants to go do it again!! YOU GO GIRL!

Erik

I had a nice time during Erik's session. I found that we share two common passions--skiing and Alaska. Erik has his sights on skiing at Mt. Alyeska, where I skiied often while living in Anchorage a LONG time ago in the 80's & early 90's!

You may remember that Anchorage was a strong contender in the bid to host the 1992 Winter Olympics. Alyeksa would have been the main skiing venue. Too bad, so sad, Albertville, France won the bid.

I hope Erik is able to get to ski Alyeska. The views from the slopes are just breathtaking and definitely worth the trip! The International Olympic Committeee doesn't know what it missed!

Chantel's Underwater Session

One Last Week!

Summer will be over in ONE SHORT WEEK for most of us! Back to school for one last year for all of you seniors!

For us it means that we have less time and increasingly less daylight to photograph outdoors. Our 3pm-7pm schedule is jam-packed with seniors and families. Our senior sessions are modified a bit to accomodate as many as possible before yearbook deadlines.

Creative Zone--Modified Session: This session is shortened to 45 minutes, and includes indoor, outdoor, b&w and color, with 3 outfits. The cost is $95. If you'd like to add 1 outfit in the park, its still an additional $35.

Drive Thru--Modified Session: This session is shortened to 20 minutes, and still includes 2outfts, indoor and outdoor, color and b&w, with a cost of $65.

We've also added a Yearbook Only session. Its 1.5 outfits (and outfit, plus a jacket or other quick-change), 10 minutes, and includes your retouched yearbook photo for $55.

Just a reminder that ALL of our portrait packages include your retouched yearbook photo. AND, no worries! We deliver the yearbook photo directly to the school for you! If you have already been photographed and already chose your yearbook image, you are good to go!

This is Hillary in a fun image with blowing hair. I love to do this shot at the end of most Creative Zone sessions for girls. Guys with longer hair look good in this shot too, I might add! I love using a white background, and it looks great with white outfits!

Chantel, Travis & Chloe

I am starting to upload 3 seniors at a time in an effort to get caught up! This is prime time for seniors and things are getting crazy around here!
If you know anyone who hasn't scheduled their senior portrait session, please encourage them to do it soon! We have only 2 weeks left before school starts!
G-Prep's deadline is the earliest--Sept. 15, with LC and Ferris just a few weeks later. You must get photographed in time to avoid rush fees, or, missing out completely!

Chantel is seen here in our "barn" area, but is coming back this week for an underwater session. She's a competetive swimmer and I'm excited to get some shots of her in action!

In addition to her session in the studio and park, I photographed Chloe in her beautiful yard this week. Location sessions like this are quite fun for me and offer a different look for your senior portraits.

I photographed Travis 5 years ago. Wow! He's grown up just a bit! He said he has 2 scholarships already, and he hasn't even played his senior year!

My Two Favorite Models!

Recognize these two cuties? I have featured both Haylee and Hunter in several of my marketing pieces over the last couple of years. They are so much fun to be around, and we always get great expressions and have a great time!

We spent some time in the park for this session, and some of their images will be included on their modeling agency's website! I'll post the link as soon as we get the images uploaded!

Sessions in the park are great this time of year! The evenings are unbelievably gorgeous--and not too hot. Give me a call to get your children or family scheduled!

I thoroughly enjoyed photographing Jon last week. As with so many of the seniors I photograph, it was not the first time he came to my studio. I photographed Jon and his two older brothers a year or so ago, when he had shoulder-length hair! I have to admit I like it this new look!

Jon is an accomplished musician, and brought both his sax and bassoon to include in his senior images. Jon shared his passion for music and his instruments during our session, and I learned quite a bit while visiting with him--he's quite an interesting guy!

The Last of Three Sisters

Kristen's two older sisters came to me for senior portraits a couple of years ago. Like her sisters, Kristen is beautiful, athletic, and a delightful subject!
I will always remember a photograph I took of all three girls when they were in grade school. They were sitting on their back porch laughing. It was an image that was used in a slideshow at the Women Helping Women Fund Luncheon. Seems like so long ago. Seems like I say that a lot lately!

Grandma Sherri & Emma

I have been photographing Sherri's "kids" at Cornerstone Montessori since...forever! Now that Sherri is a grandma, she called to have me photograph her family and new granddaughter, Emma. Emma was not overly thrilled to be part of this epic family portrait. In fact, she evidenced true diva-like traits by expressing her displeasure with the whole affair!

All said, we went back to the studio and captured a few tender moments with Emma and Mom and Dad.

And here's Sherri's kids in the park. I photographed Justin, lower left, when he was a senior in high school, and Josh, upper right, owns Waddell's, next to Twigs on South Hill.

I have to tell everyone about Tabby, and how she came over on a whim this weekend. I have been working on a new postcard to send to seniors and just wanted something new and FUN to include on it. My friend and client, Amanda, had told me a while ago that her sister was interested in modeling. So, I called Tabby and she was willing to come over, and we got some really fun images that I will definitely use on the new postcard.

Sometimes I get excited about a concept or a project and in order to make it real I have to enlist the help of other people to make it happen. As a portrait photographer I can only take pictures if I have willing subjects on the other side of the lens.

My sincere thanks to Tabby and her willingness to help me bring these ideas to life!

Destination: Lake Chelan

So here we have just a sampling of the great portraits we took at Lake Chelan last week with one of my favorite clients, Lynn, and her family!

Very strong winds wreaked havoc on the lake earlier in the day, but, as if by design, they calmed just in time for our portrait session!

Every time I photograph Lynn and her family we do something a little different. The first year we had a session in Cannon Hill Park. The next year we did black and whites in the studio. This year doing a "destination portrait" was lots of fun! They rented a great house on the lake, and found a really nice spot on the lake for portraits. We had the comfort of shade from several large trees, with a fabulous view of the water and the distinctive golden hills of Chelan in the distance.

The Last of Three Brothers

Here's Thomas! When I photographed Thomas's entire family several years ago, I think he was about 12. Since then, I have photographed his 2 older brothers' senior pictures, and now, the baby of the family, Thomas, is graduating! Am I getting old or what???

I discovered that Thomas and I have something in common--we both play guitar and love Neil Young's music. I know I'll have fun choosing the perfect song for Thomas's slideshow!!

Seniors...Again

The first image here is of Kaitlund, photographed in the "barn area" of the yard. I love her eyes in this photograph. We also went to the park and we were BOTH photographed by a photographer from the Spokesman Review. I guess we didn't make the cut since I haven't seen our picture in the paper! It was fun though, and for once, I was on the other side of the lens.

This is Stephen, chillin' on the red chair in the studio. We had a fun time, of course, and I took some great shots of him and his car in the park--but I'm saving them so he'll be surprised when he sees them in his slideshow later this week!

This was one of my favorite photographs of Hilary, who goes to LC. I always wonder if seniors will like the same ones I do...What do you think, Hilary??

Here is a really fun photograph of a family I photographed on the 4th. My friend, Debbie, entertained 31 family members at her lake house this year, and we spent the late afternoon photographing all of them in various groupings. After we got all of the groups photographed, we did got this one of Debbie and her family jumping off the dock! It looked like so much fun, many of the other families did the same! Everybody had a great time--especially me!!

Senior season is in full swing and this week I had the privilege of photographing 3 seniors from Southridge HS in Kennewick. As luck would have it, Spokane experienced some of its highest temps this week. The girls from Tricities felt right at home!

Here is my favorite image from Sarah's session.

On Saturday Paige and Chelsea drove up for their session. They braved the crowds of Hoopfest to make a quick stop at Nordstrom for some last-minute clothing items for their session. We circled the park and took some really fun photographs in and around the pond.

And this is my favorite of Paige! I have to tell you that I photographed Paige MANY years ago when she was only about 4 years old! I would post it, but its been so long ago that it was actually photographed on FILM and I don't have a digital file on hand. Maybe I'll look it up and post in someday. It was a fabulous image of Paige and her sister, Logan, who has also grown up quite a bit. Time flies...

Colin Francis

A few years ago I photographed Jacqui and Sean and their new baby, Alaina. My favorite image from the session has since graced the walls of my studio as well as the walls of Dr. Diana Hager's office here in Spokane. Dr. Hager has since moved to Colorado, but she liked the image so much she brought it with her to hang in her new office!

So, as life goes, Alaina is now a BIG SISTER! Jacqui and Sean came back to the studio last week with the newest addition to the family, Colin. We had a fun session, and Colin, unlike his older sister during her newborn session, remained awake and alert the entire time.

We got so may great images...that seems to be the problem lately--how to choose? Well, this is one of my favorites. I promise to go back to my files and find and post the image from Alaina's session so you can see the resemblance. Genes are amazing.

We had a blast watching Tanner and capturing his fabulous expressions! He was wonderful and his antics kept his mom and sister and I all in stitches! I wish all the toddlers I photographed were as cooperative as Tanner!

Summer is Here--Almost!

Meet John, Amy, Kaitlin, and Victoria! We had a great session in the park the other day. We came very close to moving it into the studio because it had been raining earlier in the day. (And several days prior!) But, as if on cue, the rain stopped, the sky brightened, and we were able to get this wonderful image of the family in front the pond at Cannon Hill Park, (otherwise known as Diane Maehl's very own personal outdoor studio!)

Today I heard that the locals are referring to this month as "June-uary" As much as I wish summer were officially here, I have to admit I haven't seen the park this green in quite some time. Combine that with the blooming dogwood trees, nice soft light from the clouds overhead, and great subjects, and you have the makings of a beautiful portrait!

Family Portraits on the Beach!

Here is my friend, Heather, and her family in two of my favorite family portraits! I will be back in Cannon Beach this summer and I would love to photograph your family! Dates for Cannon Beach will be July 31 through August 3.

I will also be at Lake Chelan in central Washington July 10-14, and in Victoria, BC August 14-16. Please call me if you are interested in any of these locations. Evening sessions are most popular, and we can only accomodate 2 families per evening. These sessions are lots of fun, and great for large family groups, reunions, etc. Even with an an extended family group, there is only one session fee of $325, which includes an 11x14 portrait. Molly, Brian & Mason James

My clients and new friends, Molly and Brian, brought Mason James into the studio for his first portrait session last week. This is one of the things I love most about my profession--being there to record the important times in my clients lives. Witnessing the joy and pride of new parents, and capturing those emotions in the camera, gives me such a great feeling.

It reminds me of how I felt when my own children were born. And how those feelings never leave you. It reminds me of how precious life is. It reminds me of the hopes and dreams we all have for our children. It reminds me that of all of my life's accomplishments, my children are the greatest.

Thank you, Molly and Brian, for helping me remember those things!

An assortment of new images

I have been a bit lax about posting images on my blog, so I'll add a few new ones now.

First, this is a new headshot of my husband, Michael. We wanted something kind of contemporary, and not so stuffy. I like the off-center, horizontal composition, the lightness of the background, and the top of the head cropped. What do you think?

Here's Joe, a 2008 graduate! Joe was very nervous about getting pictures taken at first, but it wasn't but a couple of minutes before his natural smile and great personality started to show! Congratulations, Joe!

I am still getting calls from seniors who have really procrastinated getting their senior portraits done! To any of you who still need portraits, PLEASE don't put it off any longer! This is a rite of passage and you really should have portraits to document it!

I had the privledge of photographing Sara & her mom. Trese, when Sara was pregnant, and Sara, Hattie & Eric when Hattie was a newborn. Hattie was a bundle of energy this time! And loaded with smiles!

I also photographed Trese & her husband, Keith just before Christmas last year. Getting to know all of them has been a blessing.

Here's Jace, a somewhat new member of the Baby Steps program. I photographed Jace as a newborn earlier this year, before starting this blog. He was a great subject--no crying or anything unbecoming of a 3 month old!

I would like to share a couple of photographs I recently took of Deanna Davis and her adorable baby, Carsten. Carsten is one of the happiest babies to have graced my studio in quite some time. He's at that age where he responds to your smile with an even bigger one! He was a joy to photograph, needless to say.

I also took a few PR portraits for Deanna. We had lots of fun photographing her eating chocolate--one of her claims to fame. I love photographing babies! Many clients join my Baby Steps program which allows them 3 portrait sessions for the first year of their baby's life. I can't believe how fast these babies grow and eventually graduate from the Baby Steps program! Here's Avery--he is just too cute for words!

First Post!

Here it is, March 30. Spring is supposed to be here. Yet, earlier today we got another couple inches of snow to add to the 4 or more we got yesterday!

I spent 8 days in Vegas earlier this month, and while I was gone it rained in Spokane and melted ALL of the snow we had accumulated since, oh, December? I really thought it was over...

So about Vegas. (In case you can't tell--that's me at the Venetian eating gelato.) No one in their right mind spends that much time there, but I did have good reason. In October, my sister and I heard that Bette Midler had signed a multi-year contract at Caesar's, and decided for our birthdays we'd get tickets and go. So we did. More on Bette later.

I piggybacked the concert with the annual conference I have been regularly attending each spring for the last several years. I think that WPPI (Wedding and Portrait Photographers International) has become the largest gathering of photographers in the US. I could be wrong. But it's big. Last year I know the attendance topped 10,000. It's a 6 day event of connecting with friends, attending classes, learning about the latest technology, and keeping up on the portrait photography industry. And just a tiny bit of fun and gambling.

More later about the cool stuff I saw and the new products I found that I'll be offering in studio!

Now its back to reality, back to the snow.
